Yes I do – however I landed on a very short statement that works.

“I help women entrepreneurs speak authentically online!”

Every time I use this (and then shut up) I get intriguing questions which lends me to explain my services and unique gifts.

I agree with you … women business owners have a very difficult time saying “no”. One of our webcast guest speakers.. Rick Lochner.. gave a presentation on women business owner leadership. When we asked him what is the number one area women business owners should focus on… his response was.. “learn how to say no”.

I find that many female business owner’s have a hard time asking for help and saying no. Those two factors alone handicap their business. There is an amazing amout of personal self-growth that occurs during the course of owning a business and without seeking assistance through that process it becomes easier to give up.

Excellent article! And it really gets me thinking. I’ve been running my own website design business for 11 years and am considering offering a coaching program to help others get started in this business. I definitely don’t want to fall into the snake oil category! I’ll be saving this to help make sure I shape my new venture into something that will be real and beneficial to future web designers in training!

As much as I don’t believe that you have to be established for years in order to have valuable information, I think it is always important to test before you buy. Do they have a return policy that you can live with? Do they promise more and have no clear set rules?

I started my own company recently, after many years in the corporate world. My business is not directly related to what I did before. I did learn everything I am using there. And I do believe telling people the good, the bad and the ugly. If I procrastinate, I will tell you. If I did something once or tried something many times, I will tell you. If I get paid to do, sell or promote something, I say that too. I think honesty is more important than being a so called expert.

I have fallen prey to some snake oil salesmen a couple of times. I believe that happens on every type of business, online or off. Think about the last time you or someone you know purchased a used car, house, computer.

Due diligence, feel your gut and then do what you think you should. If you get more good experiences than bad, I think you are doing well.

Business is all about Profit. When we focus on the profit we make from the passion that we have made into a business, then we can go from a HO (Hobby Owner) to a BO (Business Owner). When we just keep our attention “on helping people,” then we tend to give away our services and neglect to honor the value we provide others. When there is a cost involved, people tend to value the work they they need to do to make the change. Everyone is a winner! In creating a business plan, look for the fastest path to cash and seize it and go for it. The more you make, the more you will have to give others and this time from a place of financial security.

My first business was such a learning experience. I learned about so many things not to do. So when it came time for me to start another business and this time with a partner aka my husband, I decided to start from the very basics. I signed up with the SBA for all their business classes. I drew up my business plan and worked it while I was learning. It made an enormous difference.

Since then with my career and business ventures I put a lot of effort into learning and growing as well as doing. It’s a great balance. The feel good seminars are great but wear off once I get back to the nitty gritty of working my business. I like to schedule those with my friends who are also business owners so we can have a great feel good time together.
